Students at Kirk Balk Academy secure their BEST-EVER GCSE results despite new, tougher examinations

Students at Kirk Balk Academy, which is one of ten secondary academies sponsored by the Northern Education Trust (NET), have secured their best results ever at GCSE this year continuing the strong year on year improvements across the board at the academy.

Students at Kirk Balk achieved an incredible number of good passes this year in English and Maths as the new marking system for awarding grades in these two subjects was used for the first time. A staggering 75% of students overall achieved a pass in English, with 68% achieving the same in Maths. Both scores represent a good improvement on last year's equivalent passes at grades A*-C. These are comfortably the Academy's best-ever results and are amongst the very highest both locally and within the academy trust. The academy is also hopeful of these figures rising further due to a significant number of re-marks that have been requested due to a high number of students being very close to the pass boundary.

There were once again some outstanding individual successes. Max Hemmingway achieved an incredible full suite of A* or equivalent grades and qualified for the prestigious new 'Grade 9' in Maths. Max's 'Grade 9' was not an isolated achievement with 9 other Kirk Balk students also achieving this grade in either English or Maths. Only a handful of students nationally who took their GCSE exams this year qualify for a 'Grade 9', making this total of 10 students gaining a Grade 9 a remarkable achievement for both the students and the academy. In addition, Isabelle Bird, Benjamin Waller, Paige Thacker, Megan Mitchel, Harry Sylvester and Emily Caswell also achieved a selection of the very highest grades; meaning that between them they secured over 50 A*/A grades or equivalent!

Commenting on this year's results, Jo Nolan and Dean Buckley, the Executive Principal and Head of Academy respectively, wanted to thank all teaching staff and all students for the dedication and commitment they have shown:

"The continuing success of Kirk Balk Academy is very pleasing. This is a good set of results for us. Our aim is to ensure that every child fulfils their potential and is fully equipped to proceed confidently to the next stage in their life - whether this is into further study or into training. With results like these, we are certain we are well on our way to achieving this aim. Next year we will do even better!"
