In October, Kirk Balk Academy were pleased to host an exciting and fun day offered by the Royal Air Force and delivered by Steam Works. We were privileged to be one of 3 secondary schools in the Sheffield City Region to be selected to host this event to celebrate the RAF's Centenary.

'Reach for the Sky' was aimed at encouraging Girls into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and was delivered to 100 students. This involved 50 Year 7 Kirk Balk Academy girls and 50 Year 5 and Year 6 pupils invited from Hoyland Common Primary School.

The girls learnt about women's involvement in engineering over the past 100 years and those working in it today. RAF staff gave an insight into a career in the forces and supported the students throughout the day. In small teams, the girls from both schools worked together to solve problems and design and construct an aeroplane model from newspapers whilst applying their science, technology, engineering and Maths (STEM) skills.
