The Organisation of the Academy Day - from September 2019

We are delighted to be able to report that our continued success is not limited to our superb examination results. Each year, more families decide to choose us as their first preference secondary school and once again in September, we are full in terms of the places we can offer. As a result of our rapid improvements over the past few years, the academy population has increased significantly; this is a sure sign of success and a statistic of which we are most proud.

So that we can continue to guarantee the best possible experience for all of our students, we believe the time is right to consider how we organise our break and lunch times. To be clear, we propose that the start of the academy day (8.25am) and the finish time (2.30pm) remain the same.

However, feedback from students and staff, coupled with our continued growth, indicates that the academy would benefit from a split break and tutor period (we call our tutor period 'VMG') and a split lunchtime. To allow this to happen we propose the following:

Students to be on site from 8:20am (as normal)

Period 1 = 8:25-9:25 (as normal)

Period 2= 9:25-10:25 (as normal)

VMG/break= 10:25am-11:00am (half the academy would go to VMG and half would go to break and then swap)

Period 3= 11:00am-12:00pm (as normal)

Period 4= 12:00pm-1:30pm (a one hour lesson plus half an hour for lunch)

Period 5= 1:30pm-2:30pm (as normal)

Enrichment= from 2:30pm (as normal and as advertised)

Break arrangements:

We intend to split the break by House.

As you know, we have 4 Houses at Kirk Balk Academy; Da Vinci, Franklin, Picasso and Shakespeare.

Two houses (yet to be determined) will have break together whilst the other two have VMG and then vice-versa.

Lunchtime arrangements:

The split lunch would work as follows:

• Years 8 and 10 will have lunch from 12:00pm-12:30pm and then their Period 4 from 12:30pm-1:30pm

• Years 7, 9 and 11 will have their Period 4 from 12:00pm-1:00pm and then their lunch from 1:00pm-1;30pm

We believe that the proposed arrangements will allow students an even calmer break and lunchtime experience, despite our increase in population; with far less students in the dining and social areas at once.

Access to toilets, dinner servery areas and seating will also be much easier.

We are open to feedback regarding the proposed changes to break and lunch and would kindly ask that you use the space on the attached reply slip to provide us with your comments. Please return these to our main school reception by Friday 5th April 2019.

Once all feedback is collated and a decision made we will ensure we communicate this to you fully prior to any future implementation.
