Kirk Balk Academy students put their skills to the test with Sheffield Hallam University

Kirk Balk Academy recently volunteered to be the first school to receive Sheffield Hallam University's (SHU) new electronic interactive session which helps students recognise the skills required to be successful at university and in employment.

In March 2019, year 9 students were tasked with a perilous mission where they climbed aboard a Boeing flight that had crash-landed in the middle of an isolated jungle. Working in small teams, students took on specific roles such as leader, engineer, code breaker, navigator and torchbearer to work through a series of tasks testing their problem solving, communication, listening and team working skills to help them be rescued.

One student said, "It was interesting and it offered an insightful view to what skills are needed to go to university in a fun and practical way."

Well done to all of the students involved who thankfully were able to return safely from the jungle, with an insight into the skills required at university.
