Welcome to Kirk Balk Academy!

We know that this website is the first point of call for many people new to the academy and a regular destination for those who work with us more closely. As a consequence, we want this to be a friendly and informative website which gives visitors detailed information about us in an appealing, interesting and exciting way. We also hope the site keeps you up to date with the latest news and events from the Kirk Balk academy.

In March 2015 we became part of the Northern Education Trust (NET), a multi-academy trust, which provides us with additional resource and expertise. Kirk Balk Academy has come a long way since this conversion. We are now a thriving and successful academy with over 1100 students on roll and have formed a close working relationship with another NET institution of which I lead as Executive, called Thomas Hepburn Community Academy in Gateshead.

You only get one chance in life and it is our responsibility to ensure that at Kirk Balk Academy, each student has the best possible education - whatever their starting point.

We achieve this by having exceptionally high expectations of teaching staff and students as well as focusing on the importance of always striving to do better; to try harder. At the same time we are determined to deliver an all-round educational experience which sets us apart from other schools and makes us amongst the best nationally and internationally.

We want students to wear their uniform with pride; to show an eagerness to learn and enjoy playing their part within the whole academy society. We expect our students to be polite and well behaved at all times, arriving punctually for every lesson and showing consideration for others.

By choosing Kirk Balk, parents can be certain they are selecting the best school for their child; one where they will not only succeed academically, but will benefit from a wide range of extracurricular activities and opportunities.

As a student, in choosing Kirk Balk, you will be coming to a school that has a stimulating and exciting environment - where we will not only do our level best to ensure you achieve yours, but one where you will also have the time of your life.

I hope you already share, or will come to share, my belief that Kirk Balk Academy is an exceptional place to attend as a student or to work in as an adult. I feel extremely privileged to be the Executive Principal and hope our website will help you to find out more about us.

Executive Principal - Kirk Balk Academy and Thomas Hepburn Community Academy

    Mr D Buckley

I am both incredibly proud and profoundly delighted to be able to welcome you to Kirk Balk Academy.

The academy is going through an exciting phase in its development. Ms Nolan, the previous Principal here, has been appointed as Executive Principal of both Thomas Hepburn Academy (in Gateshead) and Kirk Balk Academy. I have been appointed as the Head of Academy here at Kirk Balk. My remit is simple; to ensure that the achievement of students is outstanding and indeed that we are outstanding in all that we do.

We believe that the whole point of schools is that students come first and it is with this, and our vision of being "outstanding" in mind, that we have created both vertical and horizontal organisational structures to best support and challenge our superb students.

We operate a House System for all care, guidance and support requirements and are blessed with a multitude of talented and caring staff who will ensure your child is both happy and successful throughout their time here.

In addition, we have an 'Upper' and 'Lower' school system to ensure each student's academic progress is rigorously tracked and monitored; as a core belief of ours is that 'no child is left behind'.

Guiding us to becoming an outstanding academy in terms of results is important, but equally as crucial is our drive to ensure all student's benefit from our extensive enrichment and extracurricular activities for sports, the arts and enterprise.

I am really excited about what we are doing here at Kirk Balk Academy and I also love my job. In such a short period of time the progress we have made has been stunning.

More and more Year 11 students each year are now going on to study quality qualifications at college or sixth form with many getting back in touch to share with us their success stories. This is possible because more young people are gaining the "gold standard" of passing their suite of GCSEs, including English and Maths, than ever before.

This really excites me because if this is what we have already achieved, imagine what will be achieved in three or five years time.

The prospects that we have here at Kirk Balk Academy are endless!

We look forward to working with you all to help to ensure that all of our students continue to get the very best deal as a result of attending our wonderful academy.
