What are lessons like at Kirk Balk Academy?

Most lessons are fun. Teachers are always thinking of new ways to make lessons fun! Using the Bunsen burners in science is great!

Is it difficult in the first few weeks?

There are some differences between Primary and Secondary school when you first move up. However, you should not worry too much. You will quickly learn your way around and it won't take long for you to become familiar with how Kirk Balk Academy operates. There is a big team of people who will help to support you, all you have to do is ask.

How long will it take me to find my way around?

Kirk Balk Academy is much smaller than you think. It does not take a long time for you to find your way around. During the first week you will be able to ask anyone to help to guide you around the building. Just remember, the school is only a triangle and a rectangle!

What happens if I get lost in Kirk Balk Academy?

If you are lost, you can always ask teachers who stand in the corridors during transition, to tell you where to go. Just look for people wearing yellow jackets!

What happens if I am late to a lesson?

Our teachers are very understanding if you are slightly late for your lessons. However, they will expect you to be on time after the settling in period. If you are late to a lesson after this, your teacher will put a late mark in the register. If you keep being late for lessons this will possibly lead to a detention.

How long does each lesson last?

Each lesson is one hour. VMG lasts 15 minutes.

How long is break and lunchtime?

Morning break is 20 minutes and lunchtime is 30 minutes. Year 7 students, when they join is in September, will eat together as a year group and on their own from 12.30pm until 1.00pm. You will have this lunchtime during transition so you can get used to it being shorter than Primary.

Which subjects are taught in ability groups?

In Year 7 Maths and English are taught in ability groups. Classes like geography and art are with your English groups. Science lessons are in your maths groups.

Which language will I study?

In Y7, you will be studying Spanish, however, in Y9 you will be able to choose GCSE Spanish or GCSE German.

Is it difficult to keep organised?

No. Make sure you have a copy of your timetable at home and pack your bag the night before to make sure that you have everything you need. Always aim to do your homework on the night that it is set so you do not allow too much work to mount up. Use your planner to help you organise what you need to bring to school on which day.

How much homework do you receive in a week?

Homework depends on what subject you do and what you are studying in it. However you will have maths homework every week.

What happens if I forget my homework?

You should always aim to remember to return your homework on the correct day. However, if you do forget you may receive a warning, or a detention following this. If you find it difficult to do your homework at home there are homework clubs available that you can attend to receive additional help and support.

What will happen if I lose something?

If you lose something go to the school Pastoral Office on floor one. This is where our lost property box is kept. Please make sure that your name is on all of your belongings so that it is easier to return them to you if they are lost.

If you lose any of your school equipment, you need to replace it, in the meantime, borrow it from your teacher or a friend.

Where do I go if I feel unwell during the day?

Should you feel unwell during a lesson then you must speak to your classroom teacher, who will then give you permission to go to the first aid Office where you will be seen by a first aider. If you are unwell at break time and lunchtime you should go straight to the first aid office.

Is the food at Kirk Balk Academy good?

Yes - the food at Kirk Balk is fantastic! We have an amazing range of different foods on offer every day which all taste delicious, such as waffles, all day breakfast and pretzels. Sometimes there are themed day lunches available too.

How much do I need for dinner money?

How much you will spend replies on what you buy! A main meal of the day costs £2. But most students put money on their ParentPay account so that they can get a snack or drink at break.

Can I bring a mobile phone into school?

No phones are allowed to be used in school. There is a purple line on the way in, no electronic devices (including smart watches) are allowed past it. You are allowed to keep your phone in your bag but not get it out or use it. It must be turned off or on silent.

Will I need to bring my PE kit on the first day?

Yes. You will commence your timetable on your first day at Kirk Balk Academy therefore, you could have a PE lesson.

What is on after school for Year 7?

There is a huge range of enrichment clubs for Year 7 to join. Different clubs run during different times of the year. Clubs may include: Football, Rugby, Basketball, Badminton, Cricket, Athletics, Film club, Drama, Music, Science, Maths, Dance and Homework.

What do I need in my school bag?

In your bag, you will need, a pencil case with at least a black pen, pencil and ruler, your planner and a reading book. On certain days you will also need a PE kit.
